MBE 4000 Major Repair (CEF01)

This three day course includes classroom lectures and practical hands on exercises for the MBE 4000 engine.

Pre-Requisites: The following is a list of the courses and exams that must be completed prior to attending the instructor-led training course.

**Technicians that have taken the following combinations do not have to take Major Repair V2:

  • Pre EGR (8858) + '04 Update (8884)
  • '04 Major Repair (8885)

  • Discuss how and when to contact the Customer Support Center
  • Demonstrate how to navigate the Power Service Literature
  • Discuss the location for design and manufacture of the MBE 4000 engine
  • Discuss the OM designation vs MBE 4000
  • Identify the serial number locations
  • Identify the fuel system flow
  • Identify the cooling system flow
  • Identify the oil system flow
  • Identify the air intake system flow
  • Identify the EGR system flow
  • Discuss draining fuel from the secondary fuel filter housing
  • Discuss draining the oil filter housing
  • Discuss replacing the jumper fuel lines (SB)
  • Demonstrate how to remove the connector pipe with the slide hammer
  • Demonstrate how to remove the injector with the slide hammer

  • Demonstrate how to mark the position and remove the unit pumps

      • Only loosen the bolts first, the unit pumps may be on the top of the lobe and be under pressure

  • Demonstrate how to mark and remove the cylinder heads

  • Discuss using a bar type lift chain or lift adapters bolted to the engine block to remove or lift the engine
      • Explain how lifting the engine from the front hook may pull the water pump off the block
  • Demonstrate how to remove the front balancer using the flywheel holding tool

  • Discuss the necessity of removing the oil pan before removing the front cover and flywheel cover
      • The oil pan bolts to them
  • Discuss the importance of keeping the flywheel clean and undamaged
  • Demonstrate how to use the camshaft removal tool
  • Discuss the oil cooling spray nozzles must be removed before removing the pistons
  • Identify how to mark the cylinder liners so they can be installed 90 degrees from their original positions
  • Demonstrate how to use the cylinder liner removal tool
  • Identify the shim used for the cylinder liner
  • Identify the EUP sprayers used to lube the cam followers and unit pump rollers
  • Demonstrate the proper procedures to clean engine components

  •  Demonstrate how to find engine specifications in the Service Manual

  • Demonstrate how to disassemble the piston (rings, bearings rods and pin)
  • Demonstrate how to clean piston ring grooves
  • Discuss how to measure camshaft and crankshaft journals
  • Using the bearing inspection guide, discuss how to determine if a bearing needs replaced
  • Demonstrate how to measure the depth of the collar seat
  • Demonstrate how to measure the crankshaft bolts
  • Demonstrate how to install and torque the main bearing bolts
  • Demonstrate how to measure crankshaft endplay
  • Demonstrate how to install new cylinder liner o-rings
  • Demonstrate how to install the cylinder liners
  • Demonstrate how to measure cylinder liner protrusion
  • Demonstrate how to measure piston ring gap in the cylinder liner 
  • Demonstrate how to assemble the pistons

  • Demonstrate how to remove and install the front crankshaft oil seal
  • Demonstrate how to remove and install the rear crankshaft oil seal
  • Demonstrate how to install new o-rings on the unit pumps

  • Demonstrate how and when to replace the valve springs and seals

  • Demonstrate how to torque the delivery pipe and thrust nut
